Manuscript Materials

The archival collection at the Jewish Museum of Maryland includes over 150 major manuscript collections and thousands of other documents and rare books relating to the lives of Maryland 's Jews.  

A browsable list of the major manuscript collections is available. For complete finding aids (inventories) of manuscript collections, please contact the archivist.  

In addition to browsing through the list of manuscript collections, it is possible to use keywords to search the JMM collections through our web-based collections database.

Photographs

The Jewish Museum of Maryland Archives contains approximately 100,000 photographs and negatives of Jewish life in Maryland . Our photographic collection can be searched (and some images viewed) using keywords through our collections database. Photographic reproduction services are available for a fee.   Please contact Rachel Kassman, Photography Archivist, at 410-732-6400 x25 if you wish to conduct photo research or if you would like reproductions of any JMM images. Please allow 2-4 weeks for completion of reproduction requests.
 

Library

The Anne Adalman Goodwin Library at the JMM contains approximately 3,000 volumes of books and periodicals. The Library also has available for research every issue of the Baltimore Jewish Times , from 1919 to the present. The JMM Library is a non-lending, non-circulating library.  All volumes are available to researchers only in the reading room at the JMM. To search via the internet for books available at the JMM library, go to our collections database. An appointment to use the Library is required. Please contact the archivist to schedule a visit.  

Oral History Collection

The Oral History Collection at the JMM is an active and growing collection. Currently consisting of over 700 interviews, these oral histories contain family reminisces, memories of life in Baltimore, and recollections of people, places and events from throughout the state.

Genealogy and Family History

The Robert L. Weinberg Family History Center is located inside the Anne Adalman Goodwin Library. The Weinberg Family History Center contains census records, ship manifests, family trees, and other research materials. To make an appointment in the Family History Center, please contact Deb Weiner, Family History Coordinator, at 410-732-6400 x24.

Conducting Research in the Library and Archives

Research in the Library and Archives is conducted by appointment only in the Anne Adalman Goodwin Library Reading Room. If you would like to visit the Library and Archives, please contact the archivist to schedule a research appointment. There is a $5 research fee for non-members. Photocopying services are available as is wireless internet.
