Congregational records are at the synagogue and include minute books,
membership lists, pew holders, lists of marriages from 1850 to 1985 (indexed
in chronological order), cemetery information, and an archive of historical
material. Baltimore Hebrew Congregation was the first Jewish congregation
organized in Maryland.

The library contains reference works, books, and periodicals of interest
to the Jewish genealogist; histories of Baltimore Jewry and synagogues;
and an extensive collection of Yizkor (memorial) books. BHU houses the
Baltimore Jewish Community Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies. It
also has the 1880 U.S. Census on CD-ROM.

The Library’s Maryland Room contains Baltimore City directories
and telephone books, histories of Baltimore Jewry, and an extensive clipping
file related to Baltimore persons, events, and institutions. Microfilm
is on the main level and contains the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore
Jewish Times, Jewish Comment (partial), and the U.S. manuscript
census for Maryland. Genealogical services are described on the EPFL website.

The library of the Maryland Historical Society contains books, photographs,
newspapers, and other materials relating to Maryland and its people.
Local history and genealogy are strengths, especially for cities and towns
in 18th and 19th century Maryland. The collection has genealogical
journals, the Dielman-Hayward File (biographical information clipped from
newspapers starting in 1800), and other resources of interest to a genealogist.
Manuscript collections include the papers of some prominent Jewish families,
including the early Etting and Cohen families. Genealogical requests

The Maryland State Archives is the historical agency and permanent records
repository for the State of Maryland. Among its collections are
probate, land, court, citizenship (naturalization) and vital records.
These include birth, death and marriage records. Some requests
filled via e-mail or regular mail, for varying fees. NOTE:
death indexes are now available on-line at http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm.

The collections document Baltimore’s cultural, educational and political
groups; urban planning in the metro area; neighborhood issues. Oral history
interviews from the Baltimore Neighborhood Heritage Project are available,
including interviews with Jewish residents. There are local history research
papers by students and unpublished papers by historians. Special collections
include the Steamship Historical Society Collection,
which documents immigrant steamships and steamship lines with photos,
postcards, ship histories, sailing schedules. (This material does not

The Albin O. Kuhn Library has many genealogical resources, including U.S.
censuses for Maryland from 1790 to 1920 (except 1890), Baltimore Port
passenger lists and index, Baltimore City directories, 1790-1930, historical
maps of Maryland, genealogy guidebooks, and other materials.
